Jitu Rai shoots gold with new CWG Record! India’s star shooter Jitu Rai won gold with a masterful performance in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Monday. Jitu created a new CWG record of 235.1 in the final to win the gold. With 17 medals, 8 Gold 4 Silver 5 Bronze, India is enjoying a Top-3 position at the moment in the tally behind Australia and England. Agency Inputs

Kerry Bell of Australia took silver with 233.5 . Om Mitharwal bagged the bronze for India with 214.3. Earlier, Om enjoyed a promising start to his campaign and emerged as the best shooter in the qualification stage. He equalled the Commonwealth Games (CWG) record on his way to qualifying for the final.

Om shot 584 in the qualifying round to equal the record set by fellow Indian Samaresh Jung at the 2006 CWG in Melbourne. Rai reached the final with a score of 570.

Lifter Pardeep takes silver at CWG Meanwhile, yet another medal came from weightlifting with Pardeep Singh winning silver in the men’s 105 kilogram category. Pardeep lifted 152 kg in snatch and 200 kg in clean and jerk to register a total of 352 kg. Sanele Mao of Samoa won gold with a total of 360 kg. He lifted 154 kg in snatch and 206 kg in clean and jerk.

England’s Owen Boxall got the bronze with a total of 351 kg which included 152 kg in snatch and 199 kg in clean and jerk. Pardeep was off to a poor start as he failed to clear 148 kg in his opening attempt in the snatch. But he recovered well by clearing that weight in his second attempt before another successful lift of 152 kg handed him the second spot. Mao on the other hand, took the lead straight away by lifting 150 kg in his opening attempt. He then needed two attempts to clear 154 kg which gave him a lead of two kilograms after the end of the snatch phase. Boxall and Ghana’s Richmond Osarfo also cleared 152 kg in the snatch, but Pardeep took the second spot due to a lesser bodyweight.

India’s women’s TT team clinches gold at CWG Singles star Manika Batra won two matches as India’s women’s table tennis team upset favourites Singapore to clinch its maiden gold medal at the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. Singapore came into this match as the defending champions and have won the event at every edition since it was first introduced in 2002 while India’s best display was a runner-up finish in Delhi in 2010.

Unperturbed by the status of their opposition, Indian paddlers played valiantly till the end to taste the gold. the first rubber, World No.58 Batra upset World No.4 Tianwei Feng 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7) to take the 1-0 lead.

Shooter Bhaker wins gold, Heena takes silver India’s Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu took gold and silver respectively in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Sunday.
