The INS Tarini, a naval sailing vessel with an all-women crew which has been circumnavigating the globe, is returning to India after successfully completing its historic mission. On Monday, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will preside over the flagging-in ceremony of INSV Tarini in Goa. Captained by Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, the team includes officers Aishwarya Boddapati, Pratibha Jamwal, Payal Gupta, Vijaya Devi, and Patarapalli Swathi. INSV Tarini started its journey from INS Mandovi on September 10.
The vessel will be flagged-in by Sitharaman at the Naval Jetty, INS Mandovi Boat Pool in Goa’s Verem at 4.15 pm on May 21, a Navy spokesperson said. The first such circumnavigation of the globe by an all-female Indian crew, the expedition, which is part of India’s policy to empower women including in the defence forces, was named ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’.
It was supposed to return in April but the steering gear was damaged, forcing the crew to make an unscheduled stop in Mauritius’ Port Louis for emergency repairs. Initially, the crew was supposed to stop only at Fremantle, Australia; Lyttleton, New Zealand; Port Stanley, the Falkland Islands; and Cape Town, South Africa.
The vessel is being regularly monitored from INS Mandovi, Verem as well as New Delhi. The crew monitored and reported on marine pollution in the past several months.
The crew members were given extensive training at various training schools, including at Mumbai and the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) in Kerala. In 2016, the women officers sailed on INSV Mhadei as part of the International Fleet Review 2016, and then on a back-and-forth trip to Mauritius.
They also sailed to South Africa’s Cape Town in December 2016 before starting their circumnavigation trip around the globe last year.
